About McLeod Ganj
Situated at an altitude of about 1700meters, McLeodganj is enriched with many ancient temples, monasteries and other edifices. Tsuglagkhang is the main temple complex and the most significant Buddhist site in McLeodganj. It is the Dalai Lama’s Temple and enshrines the statues of Shakyamuni Buddha, Avalokitesvara and Padmasambhava. The area is beset with natural beauty and its ambience is reverberated by Buddhist religious practices and routine.
McLeod Ganj is an imposing hill station and a cool tourist destination,  located 12km from Dharmashala in the Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh.  McLeodganj was named after David McLeod, the former Governor of Punjab under British rule. McLeodganj serves as the administrative headquarters of the Tibetan Government in exile.

Due to its large population of Tibetan refugees, McLeodganj has become a major learning centre of Tibetan culture and Buddhist dharmas and rituals. There are all kinds of comprehensive activities and courses on offer, and lots of visitors come over to volunteer on community projects for the refugees.

Another Buddhist and Tibetan attraction in McLeodganj includes the Namgyal Monastery, a religious centre positioned next to the residence of Dalai Lama. The highlights of the monastery are its beautifully decorated prayer wheels and Buddhist shrines. The striking architecture of St. John Church built in the neo-gothic style attracts all tourists reaching McLeodganj. Noted for its Belgian stained-glass windows, this is a perfect religious destination for the Buddhists.

Other places to visit in McLeodganj include the Peak Art Gallery, Dal Lake, and Bhagsunag Temple and Waterfall, among others. McLeodganj is well-known for its wall-to-wall shops selling Tibetan souvenirs, Buddhist handicrafts, garments and thangkas. The place has ample opportunity to bargain for carpets and handicrafts, jewellery, jackets, hand knitted cardigans and gloves.

Some of the popular markets in this hill station are Jogiwara Road, Kotwali Bazaar, and Mcleodganj Central Square. While the street shops of Kotwali Bazaar are most popular for Tibetan carpets, rugs, & exotic sculptures, the Jogiwara Road holds a reputation of the go-to place for souvenir shopping. The Mcleodganj Central Square is known to have the city’s oldest shop – Nowrojee and Son – that opened in 1860. The entire market area is famous for its wooden carvings, Thangka tapestry paintings, and handicrafts.

The flight time is usually 15 min at a minimum and can extend depending upon your pilot's experience and the weather.
